About Us
In Australia, sake is still considered an exotic beverage you often see in strange Japanese bottles at Japanese restaurants and on the drinks lists at modern Australian restaurants.
Our mission
- Introduce sake from small brewers that normally wouldn't leave Japan's shores.
- To educate and enable drinkers to choose sake with confidence.
- To make sake an everyday drink to be enjoyed at home alongside good food.
- To offer pristinely kept sake just as the brewer intended.
- To make sake accessible at affordable prices.
The Virtual Sake Sommelier
No need to know any Japanese, we've developed a filter system to help you find sake based on flavour parameters. Check your preferences in the filter to refine your search.
For sake and wine geeks, create your own sake flights using parameters including sake classification and region.
Sake Prices
Exchange rates, taxes and distribution channels make sake expensive in Australia. We buy directly from the brewery and sell directly to the public to offer high quality sake at reasonable prices.
The sake flavour spectrum is expansive
At Sakeshop you’ll find sake that is smooth and delicate, aromatic, rich and full bodied, low and high in umami. We encourage you to discover the diversity of this Japanese national beverage and discover true sake. This diversity is also why sake complements many cuisines, not just Japanese.
About the Founders
Sakeshop was founded by Leigh & Stephanie Hudson, cofounders of Chef's Armoury - Japanese knife & kitchenware importers and retailers.

Since 2013 we have been supplying sake from small artisanal brewers to the Australian public.
We aim to give our customers an authentic sake experience and offer sake you might find in a regional Izakaya or hipster Tokyo sake bar. Our portfolio covers a wide variety of styles that have been carefully selected with the Australian palate in mind.
All of our sake is imported in refrigerated containers to maintain the quality and fresh characteristics of sake just as the brewer intended. We ship from Japan several times per year and stock is fastidiously rotated on a last in first out basis so we can offer fresh as possible sake.

Hudson founded Australia’s go-to store for Japanese knives – Chef’s Armoury back in 2007. Not content with supplying chefs with the very best tools he launched Sakeshop in 2013 so hardworking cooks could enjoy a decent drink on their well-earned days off.
When not in Japan, he can be found bouncing between Sydney and Melbourne stores educating about Japanese sake, food, knives and culture.
As a frequent traveller to Japan, Hudson is the go-to-guy for chefs and journalists for hot tips on where to eat, drink and shop in the land of the Rising Sun.
Director of marketing, WSET Sake alumni, sake fanatic, International Kikisakeshi and inventor of the Virtual Sake Sommelier. Also loves to play with Japanese knives.
Stephanie is co-founder of both Sakeshop and Chef’s Armoury and can sometimes be seen in one of the stores.
She is in constant communication with our brewers to ensure we snare limited runs of the finest artisan sake and keeps the websites well fed with fresh and interesting products year after year.
